FIRST Robotics, Bedford High School, and Red Storm Team 509 are proud to present the 2018 FIRST Power Up Week Zero event on Saturday, February 17th from 8am-3pm at Bedford High School. Team 509 will be hosting the event at which 30 other teams will be participating. This year's theme "FIRST Power Up" promises to be exciting  to watch. If you're free on Saturday the 17th, you are welcome to attend to cheer on our local team and see what all the excitement is about with STEM.

From the Counseling Department:

2018 AP Exam Registration is underway through March 9th.  Each AP Exam is $94 (check made out to BHS) and dropped off at the Counseling Office.  (If your student is part of the Free and Reduced Lunch program please stop by the Counseling Office after registering.)  Google form registration found here:   https://goo.gl/bAv7az

Scholarship Season has arrived!!!  We have created a instructional video for students applying to scholarships, as well as a google form that needs to be completed for each scholarship students apply to.  These items are located here:  https://goo.gl/flfyJW.

You will find a comprehensive list of scholarships on Naviance, HOWEVER, you cannot apply or request supporting documents through Naviance (this is informational only).  Local scholarships tend to have better odds, so apply to them!!  

JUNIORS- State testing will be made up of the SAT (pencil + paper) and the SAS (online) this year. The state mandated date to administer the SAT is on Wednesday, March 21st. Since the test should conclude around 1:30 pm, students will not be required to attend 4th block. The SAS is a shorter exam and will take place the following day on Thursday, March 22nd. Please note that any student with approved testing accommodations will have a unique schedule which will be communicated to he or she individually. Students do not need to register with the CollegeBoard to take the SAT as this is done though the NH DOE. Also students will be taking the essay portion.

Do NOT bring: backpacks, Chromebooks, phones, Smart watches, homework or novel

From the IB Coordinator:

Teachers are currently in the process of administering, grading, and uploading Internal Assessments and uploading other externally assessed work. These are official IB assessments that contribute to students’ overall IB Exam scores. It is a busy time of year! Final IB deadlines for EE’s, TOK PTs, English Lit WITs and World Language WAs is March 15.

Global Coordinator:

French Exchange 2018-2019

French teachers are currently sharing information in their classes about participating in the French Exchange next year.  The students from France will be hosted in the fall of 2018 in Bedford and the BHS students will stay with the same family in the spring of 2019 during Intersession.

SPRING Sports are Ramping Up ...

Concussion testing starts Wednesday, February 7.  Please see link for complete details.  Concussion testing is required every two years. If you are a freshman and have not participated in an impact sport this year and/or a first-time athlete - You need to test.  Only pole vaulters are required to take the concussion tests otherwise Outdoor Track athletes do not take concussion tests.

BHS has two, separate mandatory concussion test known as ImPACT and Balance.  Athletes must complete both tests.  If you have any questions - Please ask our trainer, Eric Gelinas.

 

ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY!
Reminder to all student-athletes, the end of Q2  (January 19th) will determine athletic eligibility for the remainder of the winter season AND eligibility for spring sports!

All student-athletes MUST pass AT LEAST 4 classes to be eligible.  Unsure or have questions?  Email Mr. Parker  ASAP!

SCHOLAR ATHLETES

We have over 45 senior NHIAA Scholar Athletes that will be recognized in March at the Capitol Center for the Arts.  Letters from Mr. Parker have been hand-delivered from the Athletic Department to these deserving athletes that met the NHIAA criteria of obtaining a B+ average throughout their Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years - Plus, these athletes participate in two varsity sports during their senior year.  Congratulations!!

WINTER SPORTS Slideshow Producers Needed

Anyone interested in producing our Winter Awards Ceremony slideshow, please stop by the athletic department.  We have all of the candid pics you need - And, you get RWL hours and tremendous appreciation from all of our Winter athletes, friends, and families.

Boys TENNIS

Anyone interested in trying out for the Tennis team this Spring that has not tried out team before, please stop by the Athletic Department.  Boys tennis players are organizing some workouts and want to include everyone who is interested and they need to be able to contact you!

SOFTBALL

Winter workouts for SOFTBALL will begin on Saturday, January 6th and continue weekly through mid-March.  Workouts will be held at St. Elizabeth Seton from 8:30 to 10am.   Anyone interested in playing SOFTBALL in the Spring is invited to attend.  The workouts will include throwing, fielding, pitching, catching and hitting drills.  Please make sure to bring a bat, glove, sneakers and plenty of water.  For additional information contact our Varsity Softball Coach Jay Brewster @ 603-377-0439 or jaypbrewster@gmail.com

Manchester School of Technology

Applications for MST are available in the Counseling and Alternative Programming Offices. Students electing to take classes at MST for the 18-19 school year must complete their course selection forms and  fill out the application. The can be turned in to the Counseling Office or Alternative Programming Office by

Bedford School District Deliberative Session February 6​

All registered voters in Bedford are invited to participate in the Bedford School District Deliberative Session on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Bedford High School Theater. Voters will discuss the Bedford School Board's Warrant, which included the proposed budget and a special article that would authorize an Energy Efficiency Feasibility Study of all six schools in the district. There is also a Citizen’s Petition Warrant Article regarding school lunch trays. The voters will either affirm or revise the School Board Warrant at this meeting. The PTG and BeBOLD ARE EXCITED TO CO-SPONSOR A PRESENTATION FOR ALL PARENTS & GUARDIANS - Wednesday, March 28th from 7-8:15pm at BHS Auditorium

“Understanding How to Parent So that Children Can Succeed:  Addressing Childhood Anxiety and its Potential Pathway towards Substance Abuse”

Special guest speaker Jessica Lahey veteran teacher, journalist, and author of The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed.

Jessica Lahey will provide insight on how to raise kids who are happy and healthy and less likely to turn to destructive coping strategies, including ways to prevent childhood addiction. Lahey will also share research on the most effective ways to parent and support the psycho-social and emotional needs of our children.  Additionally, she will outline risk factors, explain which positive interventions can overcome those risk factors, and offer parents and teachers actionable, useful tools for raising happy, resilient children who will be less likely to turn to unhealthy behaviors when faced with the increasingly toxic stress and anxiety they face at home, in school and in our society. This event is open to all parents/guardians.

The 45-minute presentation will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session.

BeBOLD has TWO upcoming events you won’t want to miss!

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST from 7-8PM at the BEDFORD LIBRARY in the MCALLASTER ROOM

TOPIC:  “MARIJUANA - THE GATEWAY DEBATE”

There’s so much talk in the news about marijuana, especially the legalization of marijuana.  But what exactly does this mean?  Does it mean marijuana is safe? How does it relate to addiction?  What impact does marijuana have on the brain? Learn more about today’s marijuana.  This event is open to all youth ages 6th-12th grade and adults.

Presenter Marty Boldin, NH Drug Advisor to Governor Sununu with Focus on Recovery will lead the discussion about marijuana followed by a panel discussion including Diane Vaccarello of Bedford Family Therapy & BeBOLD Board Member; Chief John Bryfonski of the Bedford Police Department & Vice President of BeBOLD; and a mom and nurse who will share her personal story.
