Good Afternoon Parents,
I want to thank the many parents who have shared their views and suggestions about the pending student Walk-out. Given the broad range of opinions, I felt a follow up email to you was warranted to help clarify the school’s position on this potential event. Below I have attempted to highlight the key points around the school’s position:
- The students have a right to assemble and to express an opinion.
- The school is viewing this potential walk-out as a teachable moment and democracy in action for all students and all positions.
- In your absences the school assumes the responsibility for your sons and daughters, particularly when it comes to their safety.
- The school has offered a safe and more protected space (gym) for students to assemble and express opinions.
- The school will not prevent any students from assembling outside of the school, as it is their right to do so.
- The school can not adequately supervise and keep students safe who choose to assemble outside.
- The school will inform and request the Bedford Police/Fire departments be present should students choose to assemble outside.
- Parents may excuse students wishing to assemble outside of school for the block by writing a note in which the parent states they will assume responsibility for their son or daughter’s safety. Students may turn these in to their block two teachers, or in the case of managed time, in to their assistant principal’s office.
- Students who choose to go outside to assemble without a note will be subject to typical school consequences for skipping a class (a detention and unexcused absence).
- Students who assemble are expected to be respectful of points of view that are different from their own.
- As is our practice, harassment, bullying, ostracizing, intimidation will not be tolerated and will be consequenced accordingly should it be reported.
- School administration will be present inside to address disruptive behavior, if there is any. School personnel will not supervise the outdoor space should students choose to assemble.
- Teachers will remain in classrooms and provide instruction to those students who choose not to participate.
- We held a brief assembly today (as a follow up to the letter teachers read in Advisories) for every student to ask clarifying questions.
We are very proud of every student at BHS, whether they participate in the walk-out or choose to remain in class, as it is a demonstration of what they believe is right for them. While I realize this may not answer every question or address every concern, we will do our best to keep you apprised if new information arises.
Regards,
Bill
